Abstract

The use of reproductive medicine extends the father-mother-child triangle to involve others. Conscious and unconscious fantasies about these others can be found in the parents and their child. The treatment largely ignores their emotions and promises the creation of a long-desired child, which can result in unrealistic parental expectations. Many parents, not wanting to revisit their emotional pain, keep the origin of their child a secret. From the very beginning, they need professional support to achieve an integration of their repressed emotions, to find a shared family narrative, and to learn about the malign effects that having family secrets and unrealistic expectations can have on the development of their child.

Keywords: reproductive medicine, multiple parenthood, family secrecy, imaginary child
